Just a quick shout out for our latest web deployment, Skincare SOS.
Skincare SOS is equipped with a fairly hefty feature set, including dynamic Affiliate Marketing and 10CMS integration. When we can find the time, we’ll provide a more detailed case study of the Skincare SOS site. We’ll cover the exciting integration with 10CMS and Affiliate Window, and why this site first started out as a Drupal development but eventually went back to Expression Engine.

Static Structure with EE

Expression Engine (EE) has pretty much become our default CMS of choice. But one of the biggest issues has always been trying to coax EE into making more traditionally structured sites. Looks like those days are finally over, as the very ingenious people at NGenWorks have built a superb module for generating sites with a fixed structure! Hoorah! The Stucture Module (v1.2.7) forgoes the current template_group/template setup and creates “static” and “listing” pages that are all editable through a tree sitemap view.

This module means that the EE content is now structured in much the same way as it will appear on the main website. It’s a quantum leap in usability from a content authors perspective, and it’s something I feel Ellis Labs should have introduced themselves.

The good folks at Jambor-EE have provided a comprehensive tutorial on how to use the structure module.

If you’re new to Expression Engine?

The tutorial over on Jambo-EE assumes you’re not new to EE, and that critically you know how to configure your EE installation to hide “index.php” from the URL paths.

There are many ways to remove the index.php from an EE path, but the easiest is to use the superb htaccess generator extension courtesy of LeeviGraham.com.

I’ve started applying this module to a structure playground on our web site.

I will journal my experiences with the structure module in the comments section of this article.

Another great Drupal module; this one allows us to create sections within a site. Furthermore, each section has an installed template, theme or style attached to it.The Drupal Sections Project page contains the download and project information.

We're going to be starting work very shortly on an exciting package of extensions for the Friends of the Mills Archive Trust. The work will include a new membership subscription centre, and the addition of a new Family History database. The subscription centre will allow Friends of the Mills Archive Trust to subscribe to membership packages, which in turn will give them privileged access to the sites premium content and databases, not to mention discounts in their on-line shop!

The most exciting part of the project will be the inclusion of the Family History database which at present contains nearly a quarter of a million records. The Family History database will be maintained by a team of family historians working in close partnership with the Trust, but this treasure trove of family history information will be made available to the general public.

With a fair wind, these extensions will be delivered towards the end of 2009.

If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in assisting the Mills Archive Trust in developing and maintaining their family history database, please get in touch with Ron Cookson through the Friends of the Mills Archive Trust website.

For a good long while, our homepage has been sporting a nice SEO 1.1 certification badge, but the most recent edition of Google Chrome has started warning all visitors to our site that we might be spreading malware! And, it decided this because we had a single image on our homepage from web-developers.net.
For reasons unknown, Google and Google Chrome have decided that www.web-developers.net are a potential source of malware so we’ve had to remove the SEO 1.1 badge from our site, for now. We’ll probably just make our own at some point in the near future.

If you are into Drupal 6 themes and are tired of hand coding your theme .info files, or are still learning how to make one, then this is the application for you.For the past couple of months we’ve been hard at work evaluating Drupal 6 to see if it could offer our clients something more than Expression Engine. Drupal Themes was the only area where we felt Drupal might be too cumbersome and restrictive for our clients’ needs, but then our friend Dan Nagle sent us this gem, a Drupal Theme generator written in Adobe Air.

This nifty little utility takes some of the geekish and programmatic aspects of building Drupal themes and hides them away behind a neat user interface.

The Business Channel

Hot on the heels of Business Action TV, Greystone Media today released their latest Web.TV project, "The Business Channel". The Business Channel is the first site to be hosted on our next-generation global delivery network. We’ve been working with Greystone Media on developing their Web.TV platform for nearly 2 years. The arrival of the Business Channel marks the third successful release on this platform, and with the target audience for The Business Channel being the UK’s business leaders, it was vital that our content delivery platform could provide a flawless media experience under the heaviest loads.

Our new platform is based on a next-generation global delivery network, designed from the ground up for digital media streaming and delivery. This platform delivers an optimal online experience to every viewer - regardless of where they are.

The network features across-the-board resiliency to ensure that our content is not exposed to a single point of failure, whilst at the same time, sophisticated distribution techniques help steer our content around the Internet’s bottlenecks.

We hope to feature The Business Channel in our projects area shortly.

In the few short weeks that the FOMAT received their new community site, visitor numbers have doubled. Enthusiasts and experts alike have been actively posting and commenting on a daily basis.

Several experts who now contribute to the site have remarked how pleased they are with the websites article publishing system.

And from the number of views and comments the site has been receiving, it looks as if the FOMATs members have easily got to grips with the sites new social features.

The new social bookmarking links (Facebook, Google, MSN, Yahoo and Delicious) have seen many of the websites posts now appearing in social sites such as Facebook.

Following on from the successful work we did on the Cancer Prevention section of their UK Website, we are now working closely with the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) on the re-design and development of their global network of Websites.Led by WCRF International, the global network includes the UK, The Netherlands, France and Hong Kong. The idea we put forward was to unite the global network with a single design that has customisable elements to provide each country with a unique identity. We expect to announce the launch date and update our Projects section before the end of the year!
