I don't enjoy programming anymore, it's frustrating and tedious; This has been my mantra for a good few years, but I might be about to change my mind!
Having just spent a solid two days in the presence of Adobe Flex and ASFusion's Mate framework I've suddenly got the urge to do some programming! In two days, I've managed to rework a section of a website that took me weeks to develop in HTML. This obviously isn't directly attributable to Mate, I think Flex has to be thanked for that. However, where Mate helped, and indeed positively shined, has been that its enabled me to effortlessly control my applications work flow and data without getting in the way.

I think I'm a Flex convert, and with the aide of the Mate framework, perhaps now tedium and frustration are a thing of the past.

We are delighted to announce that we have been asked to redesign and redevelop St. James's House. Work on this high profile site will start very shortly and we hope to be done before the end of August 2008.Our creative brief from Gary and Richard is to create a site that conveys a sense of timeless elegance in the modern age. Many interesting ideas have been put forward so far, but at this stage the design is still very much nebulous. What is known is that the delivery platform will be Expression Engine on a Linux server, and as ever, it will be a text book example of web standards and best practices.

ASFusion Mate for Flex, a new framework for Flex

Mate, from ASFusion is a new framework for Flex developers that attempts to address the many perceived flaws in the Cairngorm Framework.

It's too early to tell just yet, but I'm very seriously considering bringing my Cairngorm investigation to a close and pushing further ahead with Mate. I've been very impressed in the week I've had with it so far.Week one of my investigation into the Mate framework has gone very well. With a few tweaks from the ASFusion people, I’ve got a test application up and running with full .NET thread security. I’m still finding the new framework a bit confusing, but I am finding it promotes much better semantic code than Cairngorm ever did.

I found Cairngorm very tough going, there was always a lot of grind and boiler plate code to be implemented to achieve relatively little. By contrast, I’m finding Mate quite the opposite, a little code in the right places goes a very long way. In under a week, I’ve produced more complex test applications with much greater ease than I ever did using Cairngorm.

Take a look for yourself: Getting started with Mate
