Automatic delivery of syndicated material

Most people will have encountered podcasts through the Apple iTunes software which is free and comes with every iPod. iTunes users can choose from a massive library of syndicated material, which is downloaded automatically to their computer and iPod after each new release.

Technically speaking, podcasts are digital media files that are distributed over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. These podcasts are distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically.

Typical uses for podcasts are:

  • Personal radio station broadcasts
  • Corporate communications (Health and safety)
  • School lessons, lectures etc.
  • TV Episodes
  • Audio books (Chapter by chapter)
